What will it cost?

The calculator below shows how the winning bid relates to the final amount you will have to pay. It is important to set yourself an affordable limit before you bid and to be aware of the additional costs. The winning bid is subject to VAT, the 7% auctioneer’s buyer’s premium (+ VAT) together with the £80 assignment fee.

Successful bidders

You will be informed by email (please check junk folder) once the lot has ended or you can check in the “My Purchases and Invoices” section of your account.

Deposits

If you are successful, you will be able to allocate your deposit against your invoice (if paying by card online).

If you are unsuccessful, we will refund the deposit automatically after the conclusion of the auction. This may take up to 3 days to show back in your account.

Payment

Payment may be made by internet banking or by credit or debit card.

- Payment in full must be made within 5 working days of the auction ending.
- Failure to do this will automatically incur late payment charges of £50 per lot per week.
- We cannot accept card payments over the phone.
- We do not accept American Express.
- We cannot accept CASH or CHEQUE payments.

Electronic Funds Transfer and Internet Banking

Please include the registration number and a lot number as reference. If a deposit has been made you will need to pay the invoice total and we will automatically refund the deposit onto your card. This may take 3 days to show back in your account.

What happens next?

Within 3 weeks of cleared funds being received, DVLA will post the Certificate of Entitlement (V750). This will enable you to assign the registration number to a vehicle registered in your name or in that of the nominee. If you purchase more than one registration, V750s will not be issued until payment has been received in full for all registrations.

Buying a personalised registration for someone else?

If you are buying for, or on behalf of another person you can add their name as a nominee. This can be done when paying online, alternatively when the V750 is received by post. There are instructions on the reverse to help you. There is no additional cost incurred to add a nominee. The registration can then be assigned to a nominee's vehicle straight away.

Assigning a registration

As the assignment fee is included in the final purchase price (see ‘What Will It Cost?), there is no further charge to assign that registration to a vehicle. Please see how to Assign a personalised registration to a vehicle for further information.

Not received your V750?

Once payment has been made, it can take up to 3 weeks for your certificate to arrive.

If it has not arrived within this time, don't worry, you can contact DVLA to request a replacement.

Selling a registration

DVLA only sell registrations that have never been sold or issued in the past. If you wish to sell your registration, we suggest you approach a private dealer or advertise the registration for sale yourself. We do not endorse or recommend any particular individual or company, but you can see a list of DVLA recognised resellers on our website.

Previous auction prices

DVLA publishes prices for all registrations sold at auction since 1989. The prices shown are the winning bids only and do not include additional costs.

Starting prices

These are the minimum prices at which Lots will be sold. These do not include the additional charges of VAT, 7% buyer’s premium (+ VAT) and the £80 assignment fee.

Unsold registrations

Are not available to purchase from the Timed Online Auction. They may be offered in a future auction at the discretion of the DVLA.

10 day cancellation

At the close of a Timed online auction a legally binding contract is formed between the purchaser and the Secretary of State for Transport. Timed online auctions are conducted under Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 which means that consumers do have the right to cancel their purchases up to 10 working days after the auction finishes. Please email the auctioneers within 10 working days should you wish to cancel a purchase.

Please note, this option does not apply if you are successful in purchasing a registration on behalf of a company.

Applications to cancel made after 10 working days will not be accepted.
